Philippines Boracay Island Closed for 6 Month Sewage Cleanup

Holiday plans may be foiled, but the Philippines’ government claims it is saving tourists from an even worse fate: swimming in raw sewage. The country is shuttering the tropical island of Boracay for six months due to its waste treatment problem, Agence France-Presse reports. A regular feature of holiday destination lists, Boracay is known for its white sand beaches and lively nightlife, but has earned a more dubious reputation lately for raw sewage reportedly being dumped into its pristine waters.

PROHIBITION: Circus | TIME

Men who run circuses know better than to tease the animals or to ask the employes intimate questions. To do otherwise would precipitate quarrels in the higgledy-piggledy family that a circus is. Therefore, when the 1,800 employes of the Ringling Brothers-Barnum & Bailey show received their pay in Montreal one day last week and entrained soon after for Ogdensburg, N. Y., the circus officials made no comment about the strange mounds that appeared in the bunks, strange piles in animal cages, strange packages stuffed into corners and tied under cars, all over the four-section caravan.

Adré is supposed to be a town of transition. Perched on the border between Chad and Sudan, the city, which was initially used for cross-border trade, has now become the passing point for people escaping civil war and famine in what some diplomats have called the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world.”  More than 600,000 refugees have reportedly fled from Sudan to Chad in the last 16 months, meaning the neighboring country has seen more Sudanese refugees in one year than the previous 20 years combined, many of which have settled in makeshift borders, per remarks made by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.

The Rocket Man's Dark Side

Don’t say he’s hypocritical, But rather that he’s apolitical. “Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? That’s not my department,” says Wernher von Braun. Comedian/songster Tom Lehrer didn’t know the half of it. When he composed these sardonic lyrics about the famed German rocket scientist, von Braun was already in the U.S., enjoying public acclaim for designing rockets that enabled us to launch our first satellite, land men on the Moon and become dominant in space.

The Winter King Brings the Legend of King Arthur to Life, but Keeps Its Heroes Two-Dimen

The MGM+ series “The Winter King,” adapted from a trilogy of novels by English author Bernard Cornwell, derives much of its plot from Arthurian myth. But in practice, the drama acts more like earthbound historical fiction than fairy tale or fantasy. This Arthur Pendragon (Iain De Caestecker) doesn’t pull a sword from a stone in the five episodes provided in advance, nor does he encounter any dragons. Instead, “The Winter King” deals in more pragmatic concerns: natural resources, national sovereignty and the political alliances required to attain them.

The X-Men: Dark Phoenix Ending Explained

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the movie Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix ends not with its main character, Sophie Turner‘s Jean Grey, but with a scene featuring the two men whose contentious relationship has propelled the X-Men film series for 19 years: Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). The two sit down to play a game of chess, a callback to earlier X-Men films. In several X-Men films, the chess game motif has represented the strategic moves that the various mutants and humans make against one another.
