Francesco Marinosci was only 17 when he left his home in Italy and set out for America. He was a sensible boy, but crossing the Atlantic was a great adventure, and, in the back of his mind, he looked for wonders in America. “That was 40 years ago,” he said last week in his Bronx barber shop. “So long it seems like a dream.”
The little shop, with its shabby furniture, its smiling calendar nude and its big, faded poster of Rudolph Valentino, bore eloquent testimony to Francesco’s low-key adventure in America.
When you toss a plastic bottle into your recycling bin, there’s no guarantee it actually gets recycled. In fact, odds are, it doesn’t.
According to the World Economic Forum, just 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling globally. And because of complexities in the recycling process, huge amounts of single-use plastic (as well as glass and cardboard) that consumers try to recycle ultimately endup getting burned or tossed into landfills anyway.
Even among James Cameron’s epic and frequently arduous productions, from “Titanic’s” nine months of filming to the three years spent on “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Abyss” was particularly ambitious — and difficult: The 1989 thriller was shot almost entirely underwater, requiring its crew and cast to learn how to shoot, and act, while using diving equipment with which many of them were completely unfamiliar.

Not every moment in the life of Maya Angelou, the prolific writer who died today at 86, was something to laugh at: as TIME’s Lev Grossman recounts in his remembrance, her youth was a period marred by abuse and suffering. Still, Angelou repeatedly took the chance to remind others about the importance of laughter.
It was a piece of advice she dispensed frequently often over the years, particularly when speaking to young people.
"Swipe right . But hurry. Instagram will definitely be removing this post soon," the "Slide Away" singer wrote alongside several pictures of herself walking by paparazzi. In the first pic, Miley can be seen giving a casual wave as she struts past the photographers. Okay, normal. Swipe right and you see the pop star again in the same outfit, walking, without the wave. Uh huh, everything looks just fine here.

Multiple sightings of mysterious drones have been reported over night skies in rural Colorado and Nebraska — and they’ve left local residents, sheriffs in multiple counties and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) searching for answers.
The sightings began mid-December, according to public statements by sheriff’s offices in rural Colorado. As of yet, officials do not know who is operating the drones or why they are flying over certain counties. Now, federal agencies, police departments and sheriff’s offices are scheduled to meet on Jan.
In 1961, during spring training in Florida, LIFE gave 25-year-old Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek a camera and asked him to photograph his teammates: Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford and the rest of the players on what would be seen, in time, as one of the greatest teams in baseball history.
The resulting photos were never published. (See slide 12 in this gallery for a possible reason why.) Now, five decades later, LIFE.
