In Charlotte, N.C., Willis B. Howard, 32, a driver for the Yellow Cab Co., had just dropped off two men at a movie one night last June when the two-way radio in his cab blared out the police description of two escaped prisoners from nearby Union County penitentiary. The description tallied perfectly with his last fares. Howard grabbed his radio mike, called his dispatcher’s office, which in turn alerted police. Within minutes, patrol cars rolled up and nabbed the escapees.
As far as the 90th Congress is concerned, time’s a-wastin’. With elections only a month off, its members are desperate to get their campaigns under way. Last week, for example, the 38 members of California’s House dele gation decided to adjourn, come what may, at the end of this week. One of them explained simply: “We’ve got to get home.”
For all that is getting done on Capitol Hill, the rest of Congress might as well do the same.
The British royal family is not exactly known for its diversity, so it’s no surprise that the characters depicted in The Crown are predominantly white. But in its fifth season, the Netflix drama makes space for some of the people of color who were previously connected to the institution.
Airing on Nov. 9, the show—which Netflix has taken pains to emphasize is fictionalized—depicts the Egyptian billionaire Mohamed al-Fayed and his son Emad “Dodi” Mohamed, as well as Hasnat Ahmad Khan, a British-Pakistani surgeon who dated Princess Diana for two years from 1995 to 1997.

Why the era of capital punishment is ending By David Von Drehle
The case of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev absorbed Americans as no death-penalty drama has in years. The saga of his crime and punishment began with the shocking bloodbath at the 2013 Boston Marathon, continued through the televised manhunt that paralyzed a major city and culminated in the death sentence handed down by a federal jury on May 15 after a two-phase trial.
More than 12 million American households have gotten a pet in the time since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March 2020, according to the American Pet Products Association. The growth in pandemic-era pet adoption continues the trend of Americans turning to their pets for companionship in tough times. As TIME put it in a 1974 cover story, “During wars, insurrections and depressions, particularly, pet ownership seems to proliferate. Even in today’s recession-inflation battered economy, when the care and feeding of pets would seem an exorbitant load on the family budget, there are more and more pet owners in the U.
Freshmen at colleges across America have settled into their first few months of classes, and the expectation is that most of them have found their groove. But for all the talk about college being a time to find your niche, not everyone feels the natural ease of fitting in right away. Cornell University freshman tackled the issue in a video about the loneliness she has experienced in her first few months at the school.
The first time I swiped, I was sardined between friends on a train back to New York City. With an hour to go and conversation running dry, we decided to download a smartphone app we kept seeing people use during our weekend away: Tinder. Suddenly the screen of my phone was inundated with an ever updating stream of male suitors: loafer-wearing Kip, 28, popping champagne on the deck of a boat (pretentious–swipe left!
When Congress in 2008 declared the Friday after Thanksgiving to be Native American Heritage Day, the resolution made only passing mention of why that timing made sense. It would “underscore the government-to-government relationship between the United States and Native American governments,” presumably due to the longstanding national myth of a first Thanksgiving marked by a peaceful alliance between European colonists and American Indians.
That reasoning was listed as the seventh point in favor of such a day.
America’s semiquincentennial anniversary is just two years away. It’s a milestone opportunity to unite the country and recognize the vast history and strength that lies in its future. While many founding figures played vital roles to attain independence, the crucial support from the nation’s first ally, France, is often overlooked. Today the Franco-American alliance is a multifaceted relationship where, despite different perspectives and experiences, the countries are connected by shared political ideals, educational and scientific endeavors, alongside culture and cuisine.
