Minor inconveniences can ruin your day

In fact, therapists agree that these "little things" are often the cause of our bad moods and we shouldn't be ashamed of reacting emotionally to them.

Emma Mahony, a therapist from Philadelphia, explains that unexpected events can effectively ruin not only our day, but also our mood. It may be related to traffic jams, changes in plans, bad weather, our appearance or other things that seem trivial at first glance.

It turns out that our brain works in such a way that it transforms a small problem into a much bigger worry, which is why trivial things often grow to a global scale. We look for predictability, patterns, we want to understand other people and ourselves. Therefore, when our plans do not go as planned, it is easy to fall into spirals of negative thoughts.

However, it doesn't have to be this way. There are ways to deal with these "little things." Mahony emphasises that it is important to allow yourself to feel the emotions associated with these setbacks, but not let them turn into a spiral of negative thoughts and actions. Focusing on what is within our control can help us take control of the situation and avoid falling into negative thinking.

In turn, psychotherapist, Danica Harris, advises to pay attention to the things that annoy you and look for ways to change this state of affairs. For example, if you are always annoyed by traffic jams, think about what you can do to make this time more enjoyable. Maybe it's worth listening to your favourite podcast during this time?

Remember that minor inconveniences are part of our lives and how we react to them depends only on us. So if your day is ruined by a small thing, remember that you are not alone and that it is completely normal. And above all - remember that there is always tomorrow - full of new possibilities and chances for a better day.
